2001 Steve buys his dream car! – A BMW 328i in British Racing Green | Fastest I’ve been outside of a jet. Quickly doing the maths from the back seat… trying to work out if we’re going fast enough for our atoms to simply pass through the heard of cows that just wandered onto the road ahead, outside Delta UT. (Good thing the brakes were fast as well)

I met Steve in 2004 when he joined Publicis Groupe as the Manager of the MS Exchange team. He came on during a particularly tough time, as we were (very painfully) transitioning from Lotus Notes to MS Teams enterprise-wide. At the time, I was the Help Desk Manager and this team accounted for 80% of our incidents and 100% of my problems. When Steve came in on his first day of work, I placed him on my Help Desk so he would know the pain his team was inflicting on the organization (I had worked that out with our CIO at the time). He was only required to sit with us for two days, taking calls and being yelled at for an issue he didn’t cause (and believe me, he got YELLED AT – but he made the choice to stay on for a week!!!
Steve was a man who was born to make a difference where one needed to be made. And he made a VERY significant difference to the users and support teams around him. He worked hard to improve the plight of the people around him. He was warm, generous with his time and knowledge, patient as a teacher, a true motivator, an amazing friend, and a kind listener, mentor, and advisor of work and life situations. I so appreciated Steve, that I eventually applied to work for him – not having any idea about the technology that he was managing at that time (ServiceNow) – he hired me and taught me everything I know. When he left Publicis Groupe and landed at KPMG, I willingly followed him there. When he left KPMG, I quit rather than work under someone else. I quit with confidence in myself that I could take on any role in that space anywhere – a confidence that Steve instilled in me through his thoughtful training. And I excelled – as he said I would. I took my first position as a Director for a global company! Steve was one of my references for that role and he celebrated me (as was his custom) when I texted him to let him know I had gotten the job. I couldn’t believe it, but he could.
That’s the Steve I’ve known more than 20 years. He’s never waivered in his support and loyalty – and inherent goodness. When he reached out to tell me how sick he was, I felt sick myself. Heartbroken and gutted. The world lost a bright source of light when Steve passed away. I will be forever grateful for the time I spent with him and the wisdom I gained from him. He playfully referred to me as his little sister and I thought of him as my big bro. I will always remember our long “life” talks and his advice (and very dry humor 🥹). My heart hurts for Steve’s family in particular and I offer my deepest condolences to you all. At his core he was as mentioned, a family man that loved and cherished his wife and children. I pray that in time, your hearts will be healed.

Once while at Steve’s house for dinner, my husband commented to me to remember to buy toothpicks. Steve jumped up from his chair to grab a new pack of toothpicks to gift to my husband. He then continued to explain why the toothpicks he uses are the best ones. That is Steve. The man who always gave freely to those in need even if it was as small as toothpicks. His heart was so big and so beautiful. My husband and I appreciate all the fun memories we have with him and his family. Steve will always have a special plane in our family’s hearts. 🩷

Sometimes little sisters have favorites. And from my earliest memories, my favorite older brother was Steve. And everybody knew it. Steve didn’t know why I picked him and I couldn’t explain it either. But I followed him around ever since I was little and he let me. That’s the remarkable thing. Steve let me be his little shadow. He would comfort me when I was scared. Even though I was eight years younger, Steve would give me his time and attention and even let me hang out when his friends were over.

Steve taught me to love all things British. I learned from an early age that if there was a London cast recording of a musical then that was the superior version.

Steve could answer any of my computer and technology questions. I used to ask him what his job was but eventually stopped understanding what he did. I would just tell people my brother was king of the computer nerds.

Steve was also generous with his cast-off electronics. He was an early adopter so I never had to learn what to buy, Steve would just mail me his old one.

Steve was a great big brother and I’m grateful he took the time to leave me with so many good memories of him.
